KS1 Reading and Phonics

As children begin to read in EYFS and KS1, we focus on decoding in daily phonics sessions using a structured Phonics programme called ‘Song of Sounds’. This then links to the reading scheme books with the children applying sounds that they have learnt in their phonics sessions to their reading. Children also learn to read using whole word recognition, rhyme and context. As children build fluency, further reading skills are developed including, re-telling, inference and prediction.

All children have the opportunity to visit our school library once a week. Children are encouraged to read a range of text types including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. They have the opportunity to talk about books and authors that they have enjoyed and extend their current reading experiences.
